Yoga For Weight Loss

When people decide to embark upon a weight loss regimen, they typically don’t think of yoga first. Images of heart-pumping exercises come to mind rather than the graceful movements of yoga. But this blogger brings up some excellent points that suggest that yoga should not be overlooked as a major part of your weight loss routine. In addition to the flexibility and strengthening benefits yoga offers, the art itself touches upon the psychological and spiritual aspects that may have lead you to gain weight in the first place, and in addressing these, can restore you to a healthier weight. Yoga encourages the practitioner to enter a greater awareness of body and mind, while opening the channels of clarity. This system of knowingness can lead the yogi to a better understanding of the physical, mental, emotional, and psychological sources of his or her weight gain. There are many DVDs out there that address weight loss through yoga. So, roll out the mat and get in shape from all angles. More at this blog.

Review of Beth Shaw’s YogaFit

Beth Shaw is the founder of the YogaFit system, a comprehensive workout program that emphasizes yoga at its core. She has come out with a second edition of her book, Beth Shaw’s YogaFit, and Martha McKinnon, BellaOnline’s yoga editor, reviews it here. McKinnon’s review is sterling and calls this user-friendly book “a helpful guide and resource to beginners wanting to practice at home and athletes looking for suggested yoga routines to support their cross-training efforts.” She also touts its benefits for yoga instructors looking for alignment principles and safe sequencing suggestions for students. Shaw’s vast knowledge is poured into this rich tome, which includes the seven principles of alignment, breathing, equipment, sixty yoga poses, fitness-focused workout sessions, and chapters on diet, nutrition, and meditation. Gyrokinesis – Yoga Dance

Gyrokinesis, sometimes called Gyrotonics or Yoga Dance, is an exercise that consists of a series of fluid yoga-like movements, mainly from a chair. You’ll recognize cat and cow poses, and various twists, but in a smooth dance form. While this fun workout is great for anyone and everyone, those looking for a slightly gentler cardio pump are the best candidates for this exercise. A good Gyronkinesis instructor will keep you moving at all times, though, and will give your spine a hefty workout. It is particularly beneficial for those who are dealing with limited movement due to injury or stiffness, or those looking to improve their limberness, increase athletic prowess, or ease the effects of certain illnesses such as arthritis or osteoporosis.
