Feng Shui, What You Can Do Right Now
by Roberta Striga
If you start reading up on Feng Shui, it can become quite overwhelming quite fast. With its different schools and subtle laws it can leave a person paralyzed and at loss where to even begin.
Fret not, first thing is that I have learned through the process is that you can do anything for 15 minutes. And secondly it is not necessary to go on a redecorating Feng Shui bonanza that will leave you feeling exhausted and grumpy. Rome was not built in a day and you will not be done in one day either. So before you run out and start purchasing Chinese coins, Dragons and Lucky frogs lets see what can be done right now to reclaim your home and get some Chi flowing.
The bottom line is your home should be your sanctuary. Your retreat. One place where you feel safe, cozy and comfortable. Get the basics right and then you can move to the more advanced stuff.
De-Clutter
There is nothing and I repeat nothing better that will get the energy flowing more freely then a good session of de-cluttering. Clutter drains your energy, it makes your home feel stagnant and it looks messy.
If you have never de-cluttered before, start small, 15 minutes at the time, one room at the time. There is no point in going around with a huge garbage bag if you are going to lose steam half way through. Check your drawers, closets, book shelves. Get rid of anything you do not use or love. And give away the stuff that can be used by someone else. Not only will you be getting rid off clutter, but doing something good to boot.
Open the Windows
Do not underestimate the benefits of some fresh air and natural light. I love going for a brisk walk when my head feels fuzzy. It is invigorating, it clears your head and you breathe more easily. So why would you not want to do that in your home? And this is another sure way to get the energy moving freely again. And use the natural light as much as possible, no matter how much or little you can get, every bit counts.
Some DIY
Leaky faucets? Tighten them. Light bulbs not working? Replace them. Squeaky doors? Get that WD-40 out and spray it on the hinges. And while you are at it, wipe down that front door (it makes the house more inviting).
Turn yourself into DIY god/goddess. Leaky pipes in Feng Shui mean that the Chi is going down the drain, so to speak. And your money is going down the drain too. If you cannot open your doors properly the Chi cannot flow to you. Every little thing has a meaning and purpose in your home and in your life. The practice of Feng Shui is a practice of mindfulness as much as anything else.
Seems like good old common sense? Well that is one thing to love about Feng Shui–it might be centuries old but it still makes sense today.
