Relationship Web Highlights: Lighting the Most Important Room of the House (Product Spotlight)

May 14th, 2008

Ever give much thought to lighting when it comes to the bedroom atmosphere? It’s a quick and effective way to control the ambiance in your lair, especially if you aren’t up for changing all the other things in the room (like the walls, the furniture, etc.). As you might have guessed, there are plenty of great creative lighting ideas on the Web and I’d like to share a few with you.

The Lingerie Post

The Lingerie Post not only spotlights lingerie happenings around the world, but lately has been sharing bedroom ideas in its “Complete Boudoir” series by exploring lighting options for your love den. The suggestion I was most impressed with is a light projector by Adam Frank called Reveal which actually simulates light coming through a swaying tree through the window, casting light onto your wall! This illuminated trompe-l’oeil can be directed onto the most boring wall without windows, transforming it instead into a mood creator. No privacy issues with this virtual window! It can be had from Generate’s Web site at gnr8.biz.

gnr8.biz

Exploring the Generate site on my own, I found lots of other appealing lighting ideas, one of which is the Buddha lamp available in yellow, white or orange and is rendered in the shape of a young Buddha’s head, 14 inches tall and glowing in your hue of choice. I also found the Cut Light by Monica Singer which is a lampshade for a hanging lamp. The Cut Light’s advantage is that it can be customized by you! Simply break out the scissors and create your own lamp design achieving any visual or mood you desire. One caveat is that you must use an energy-efficient compact fluorescent bulb in it, but we are all using those anyway, aren’t we?

Design Within Reach

If money is no object, over at Design Within Reach there is a stunning architectural lamp named Taccia by the Castiglioni brothers. This table lamp was designed with a fluted metal base with a glass bowl which rests on top and directs the light -– the actual light bulb is hidden from view in the base which cancels out glare. Inside the bowl lays a matte white concave dome which is said to reflect a celestial glow. Nice!

Design Within Reach also carries the Gatto Piccolo Lamp, which is a subtly lit piece with a soft warm glow generating from a sensuous hourglass shape…also by the Castiglioni brothers.

CB2

Does anyone else remember “Up Lights” from the seventies? These inexpensive fixtures cast light up into the room via radiant wall or ceiling bounce with complete subtlety since the lights themselves can be hidden from sight under or behind plants, furniture, etc. They are available on CB2’s Web site.

Candles Anyone?

Of course, you always have the option to use candles, but please be safe -– especially if there is any possibility you may fall happily asleep at some point. Or, you could always use these realistic non-flame Rechargeable Candles — they even flicker! These supply up to 12 hours of light each.
