Yoga & Body Web Highlights: Yoga for the Physically Challenged, Intro to the Chakras, A New Earth Commentary

Adaptive Yoga

Yoga is one of those versatile physical practices that can accommodate people at any level. An advanced student may be standing on his head while another is using a block for triangle pose. But even people with disabilities can have a fulfilling yoga practice. Adaptive yoga caters to those with physical limitations and even serious illnesses such as multiple sclerosis, arthritis, cerebral palsy, and cancer. Adaptive yoga classes usually welcome those in wheelchairs or with walkers, and people with guide dogs. Others who also might benefit from adaptive yoga are post-surgical patients or those recovering from injuries. Here’s a timely article that discuses the wonderful offering of adaptive yoga. See www.cnn.com.

The Chakras

Chakra means “spinning wheel of energy.” Many yoga practitioners know that there are seven chakras but don’t really know what they are or what they do. This video is a nice visual introduction to the chakras, showing where they lie within the body, what their purposes are, the color associated with each chakra, and how to know if one or more are out of balance. This video doesn’t demonstrate a chakra-balancing meditation but does direct visitors to another video for that. This is an excellent introduction to the chakras and a great preamble to actually meditating upon them or using chakra-balancing methods.

Thoughts on A New Earth

Eckhart Tolle’s newest book, A New Earth has been getting tremendous press, particularly through Oprah’s weekly broadcast endorsement. So, bloggers have been voicing opinions and sharing enlightenments about this literary tome that is subtitled, “Awakening to Your Life’s Purpose.” One writer reflects on the connection between this book and yoga, as gleaned from an interview between Elizabeth Lesser and Kim Eng, Tolle’s partner. Eng teaches a variety of movement classes, including Tai Chi and Qi Gong, and lends her experience to discussing the mind-body connection in Tolle’s book. See www.yogaeveryday.wordpress.com.

Here is an earlier blog from someone who also heard the Lesser-Eng telecast and has other thoughts on the subject. See www.abundancehighway.com.
