Soul Mate Theories, Just What Is a Soul Mate, Anyway?
by Jesudas Baba
Just what is a soul mate anyway? Just like asking what God is, if you ask 1,000 people what a soul mate is you will get 1,000 different answers.
Some think it is the person who was created to be with you and you with them. An extension of this idea is that soul mates were originally created as one soul that was then split in two. There is also the belief that a soul mate is someone with whom we have had a deep and meaningful partnership in a past life. Others feel that it would be someone we are drawn to with no control and the person we are with, whomever they may be, is our soul mate. Still others have the opinion that anyone can be your soul mate if you are willing to work on the relationship.
I like to come at it from the other direction.
A basic idea that is common among many different belief systems is that we are all one. This idea can be found in ancient Hindu texts. It can be found in Buddhist writings from all traditions, from the sayings of Buddha himself to writings of Zen. It is found echoed in the Christian idea of being one in the spirit. It is part of the core of A Course In Miracles.
Certainly everyone I know who has a belief in the soul mate concept in whatever fashion also believes that we are all one.
What could this mean in relationship to the idea of soul mate? For one thing, instead of being one soul split in two, this would suggest we are actually one soul split into billions, trillions, gazillions! That means no matter who you are talking to at any given moment you are talking to your soul mate.
Of course, this leaves open the question of why we have relationships that seem to us to be divinely inspired and why some people we wouldn’t touch with a ten-foot pole. Still room here for some of the other soul mate ideas to ring in. Would the answer to this question provide us with a better definition of soul mate? Or would it cause us to abandon forever the concept of soul mate in favor of a more fitting paradigm?
Something to think about…
